Hun Manet: People Must Remember the Past and Unite to Protect Peace

PHNOM PENH: Gen. Hun Manet emphasized that it was Prime Minister Hun Sen and the leaders of the Cambodian People's Party that ended the war by liberating the country from the Khmer Rouge and launching its Win-Win Policy. He said that now the nation is completely at peace.

On June 27, Gen. Hun Manet commemorated Cambodian war veterans by awarding medals and giving a speech. He reminded the crowd of the events leading up to the Khmer Rouge and said that in 1970, Lon Nol lead a coup to overthrow King Norodom Sihanouk, plunging Cambodia into the flames of war and turning the prosperity of the people into war-torn destruction. He emphasized the merciless massacres that took place under Pol Pot’s leadership.

He said that these historical events left many families torn apart and devastated, with memories of this tragic past being unforgettable. He then told all Cambodians to remember the past that the nation has suffered, to work hard to avoid wars and divisions, and to unite behind protecting peace at all costs.

He said, "The Prime Minister and the leaders of the Cambodian People's Party represent the end of war. By rising up to liberate the country from the genocidal regime and laying out a win-win policy, they led the country to its current state of peace, prosperity and glory.”

He emphasized that the Royal Government, led by the CPP, has always paid attention to the veterans' welfare and the promotion of their status by focusing on three main priorities: life, livelihood and honor.
